First and foremost, the College of Charleston would like to say thank you and good luck in your future ventures to their graduating seniors, Mike O'bannon, Rupert "Pip" Munro, Lee Altman, Greg Fronda, and Andy "Pantheon" Kirkland.
The Toys for Tots tournament included CofC, the Citadel, the Fort Lejeune Misfits, and the Charleston Outlaws.
The first match for the Cougars was against the Citadel at 9am. CofC decided to play only players that will be available in the Spring for this match. The Cougars came out firing on all cylinders and quickly went up by 3 on a penalty conversion by George Woolston. The Cadets tied the game at 3, only to further ignite the Cougars. Captain Joey Ingham, playing out of position at inside center, made a dominating 50 meter run in which he broke 6 tackles to score the first try of the match. George Woolston added one more try before the end of the half on a run where he singled out the weak side wing and thoroughly embarrassed him with an explosive stiff arm to the chest, giving the Cougars confidence heading into the half. The second half included much of the same from CofC; the quick backs and powerful forwards asserted dominance over the Cadets. Slippery moves by Tate Smith and a fortunate bounce for Shaun White gave each a try before the final whistle. The final score: CofC 32- Citadel 15.
The second match of the day was between CofC and Fort Lejeune. The Cougars decided to start their B-side players that didn't get playing time against the Citadel, graduating seniors, and A-side guys who needed to fill holes. The Cougars did not like their chances going into this contest, but as the game progressed, the confidence and vigor of CofC steadily increased. The Cougars conceded a quick try by the Misfits, but then responded with one of their own by Dan Markovich, entering the half tied at 5. The second half proved the heart of CofC. The Cougars played to win the game, with an opportune try by Ryan Koons and a clutch penalty conversion by George "Big Dawg" Woolston. The Misfits, not going down easy, scored 7 points with not much time left, but the Cougars were able to weather the storm and held on to win their second straight match.
The third match of the day was more of a marathon than a rugby match. The tired, injured CofC RFC took on the Charleston Outlaws A-side. The Cougars played hard, but had a tough time matching the size and speed of the Outlaws. There were a few shining moments in the game for the Cougars. Ryan Koons scored another try on the day, to give him 3 for the year and Tate Smith caught the fastest wing on the field for the Outlaws from behind on a break away.
Man of the Matches: Ryan Koons for clearing rucks, making bone-jarring tackles all day long, and leading the team with two tries on the day.
Dicks of the Day: Happy for letting a kicked ball go straight through his hands and hitting him square in the face. Miles "Keanu" Coffman for getting tackled by a player... who was carrying the ball and also for completely whiffing on a kick, Charlie Brown style.
All in all, the CofC RFC has made major strides in the Fall of 2010. The team's talent has steadily improved and is now turning the heads of many. Several position battles have been resolved, with several others still up for grabs. The future looks bright for the young Cougars who have their sights set on the Peach Conference in the Spring of 2011!

2010 Annual Alumni Game

After another successful Bike Tour the night before, the Alumni (+ ringer) and the Current CofC RFC took the pitch on a sunny Saturday afternoon. From the opening kickoff it was clear that the Alumni (+ ringer) were the superior team in terms of talent, but the relentless tenacity shown by the Current Cougars left the score tied at 0-0 after one half. The second half began and the Alumni jumped out in front of the Current team with tries by Ryan Murray and Statch Bethel. At 14-0, the outcome looked rather bleak for the Current team... until, out of no where, Pip "I'm Sorry" Potter reached deep into his sack of Hogwarts tricks and pulled out a blindness spell, which he then cast onto the Alumni as he ran a quick tap for an encouraging 5 points. The following conversion made it 14-7 with not much time for the Current Cougars to score the equalizer. As the game ran on, the Alumni began to demonstrate the hours (or lack there of) of conditioning that they had been putting in in preparation for the event. With penalty after penalty being called on the tired Alumni, Austin Coon took a quick tap from 5 meters out and dove into the try zone, putting the Current team within a straight on conversion of tying the match with not much time left. Unfortunately, this tale did not result in a story book ending. Mike O'Bannon missed the conversion, leaving the final score 14-12 in favor of the Alumni. Though the game did not end in the most desired outcome for the Current CofC RFC, the team held their heads up in pride for the effort displayed against the biggest, most talented team they have faced all year.
Man of the Match: Coti Phillips for clearly outplaying his counterpart Robert "Oggie" James (the team's starting fullback from last year).
Dick of the Day: I mean, I think it's pretty clear.
In the second match of the day, the CofC B-Side took on the Charleston Outlaw B-Side. CofC started nearly all Rookies and a few guys who have never played in a rugby match in their lives, while many of those who have played, were playing in a position that they have never played before. The Cougars were clearly outmatched in terms of game knowledge and size, but CofC never gave up. Rookie Tristan had only made it out to one practice before this game and he cleared several rucks single-handedly by pure strength and athleticism. Rookie Carlos showed excellent ball skills and turned in the play of the weekend by chasing down what looked like an easy try for the outlaws and knocked the ball out of the opposing player's hand as the outlaw's player was standing in the try zone about to place the ball down.
Men of the Match: Xavier for playing in his first rugby match and dominating in tackles/rucks and Shaun White for drastically improving in tackling.
Dick of the Day: Miles "Keanu" Coffman for turning his back and running from the Outlaw's #12 instead of trying to make the tackle.

One week removed from the heartbreaking defeat at the hands of the Alumni, the CofC Cougars looked to rebound against another large, formidable opponent. The CofC B-Side took on the Outlaws B-Side the week before and the lopsided score in favor of the Outlaws spoke for itself, but as the CofC A-Side prepared for this game, they only had one thing on their minds: Upset. The game began and the Outlaws scored the opening try of the match with a quick pivot between #10 and #12, but as the Cougars did not give up the week before, they kept their heads up and fought on. After some strong forward play and a near try by George Woolston, Austin Coon scooped up a loose ball and dove into the try zone to tie the game at 7 going into the half. The Outlaws responded at the start of the second by scoring two more tries. The Cougars pressed on, and after a strong run by Alex "Bam-Bam" Cook, Oliver Frank TJ Mackie scored a try to put CofC within 5 points of tying the game. The Cougars gave it all they had, but after a passing mishap, leading to another Outlaw try, the game was sealed. CofC ended up losing 14-26. Tough game, riddled with injuries, but as another week goes by, it becomes more and more clear that this CofC team is going to be a force to be reckoned with come January.
Man of the Match: Oliver Frank TJ Mackie for chasing down a kick to set up his own try, in which he single-handedly ran through the defense and finished it off by flinging himself into the stumps, dislocating his shoulder, and scoring a try.
Dick of the Day: Jazzy Jeff, not for making a nice shoestring tackle on the largest back line player on the Outlaws, but for what he did after that. Immediately following his David vs Goliath moment, Mr. Jeff ripped the shoe off of his opponent and spiked it into the ground, as if he just scored a touchdown...

The 2010 Rookie Cougars all met at Coach Clint's house on a beautiful Saturday. With the help of Coach Sam, Assistant Coach Rob, Team Vets O'Bannon, Lee, and Pip, and Captains Joey and Coon, the CofC RFC put on its first ever "Rookie Clinic". At this event, the leaders dissected a few professional rugby matches for the young cougars, in order to teach the flow of the game, along with calling attention to the fundamental game plan that the team will use going forward. The basics of rucks and ball placement were highlighted in a short tutorial, followed by a short jog down to the beach (while singing a new, interesting song led by Coach Clint). On the beach, the Cougars played touch rugby until the sun went down. At sunset, the cougars walked back to Coach Clint's house to enjoy a cornucopia of delicious barbecue chicken, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, and corn on the cob. Hopefully, the lessons learned during this clinic will pay dividends as the team moves forward.
