The 3rd annual Blackout Tournament in Charleston, SC was held on the 9th of April. The returning champions, the College of Charleston Cougars, were set to take on the Citadel, UNC-Wilmington, and Appalachian State University. The first game of the day was CofC-A vs the Citadel. The Cougars were ready to take their cross town rivals after a not-so-stellar performance against the cadets in matrix play. CofC displayed excellent defense in the 1st half and capitalized on an early opportunity as Shaun White scored the opening try of the tournament. Later in the half, Austin Coon took a pass from Shaun and drove through several cadets on the way to another try. The 2nd half was much of the same as CofC began to poor on the points, continuing to display great tackling. There were tries scored by "Tall" Jon Bernstein off of a nifty lineout play, Joey Ingham off of a half-somersault, George "Big Dawg" Woolston off of a timely overload, and by, Zulu Warrior, Jeremy "Penguin" Tindal who finished his try with a special celebration. The Cougars yielded a try and a couple conversions, but the Citadel was clearly outmatched for 50min.
The 2nd match of the day was between CofC-B and Appalachian State (AHO). The young Cougar squad fought hard and showed promise of a bright future for the club, but, in the end, AHO proved to be too much for CofC-B and took the match convincingly.
The 3rd match was played between CofC-A and UNCW-B. The Clam-diggers were determined to give CofC all they could handle, but about midway through the 1st half, Shaun White passed the ball to Austin Coon, who immediately looked back inside to Shaun, setting up White for his 2nd try of the day. This match was competitive early on as CofC clung to a 5 point lead at half time, but in the 2nd half, CofC blew it open. Ray Chappell earned a Zulu and then added 1 more try for good measure. George "Big Dawg" Woolston displayed excellent awareness as he hopped into the back line, received a pass from Shaun White, passed the ball to Austin Coon, and then looped Coon, who floated a ball out to the Dawg for his 2nd try of the tourney. JJ Garrell explained that he wanted to keep the game interesting, so he caught a kickoff and kicked a line drive directly into the hands of one of the Clam-diggers in stride; the play resulted in a penalty conversion for UNCW. Garrell made up for the play on the next kickoff as he caught the kick and broke several tackles on the way to a single-handed try. The win gave CofC a spot in the Blackout Championship.
After a lunch break, the next game turned out to be the game of the day, as AHO took on division rival, UNCW. The match was back and forth with opportunities to score by both teams. The match a defensive struggle and it was clear that whoever score 1st would win the match. The team that scored was AHO, placing App State in the Championship vs CofC.
The Citadel played 2 more matches on the day. The 1st was against UNCW-B/CofC-B. the 2nd was against UNCW-A to see who would receive 3rd place. Citadel won the 1st match and then lost the 2nd; therefore, 4th place in the 2011 Blackout Tournament went to the Citadel, while UNCW claimed 3rd.
After 2 matches and being in the sun for 9 hours straight, the Championship match was a tough one to say the least. CofC fought hard, but D-II juggernaut, AHO, was clearly the more skilled team. App scored many tries, but the Cougars kept fighting, determined to not be shut out. Late in the 2nd half, with CofC 20meters out, Joey Ingham quick tapped after a penalty and popped the ball off to Austin Coon sprinting to the weak-side. Coon cut it up, stiff armed a defender, and stretched out to score the final try of the season. AHO won the tournament, rightfully so, but CofC gave an outstanding effort and took home 2nd place in the Blackout Tournament for the 2nd time in 3 years.
Man of the Match: All of the CofC seniors; but more specifically, Nicholas Butler for being the 1st woman to play for the College of Charleston Men's Rugby Team. She was the toughest dude on the field all day, outplayed the entire Citadel team, made all of her tackles, made a guy fall down, and got bird-called throughout the process.
Dick of the Day: Joey Ingham, for going Charlie Brown and whiffing on a kick while the Cougars were pinned inside of their own 5meter line, resulting in a knock-on and a 5 meter scrum for the Citadel.
Now its time for the young CofC team to rest up and get ready for next season. Shock the World boys!
The club would like to wish a farewell to their seniors: Cullen Lea, Joey Ingham, Austin Coon, Coti Phillips, Eric Harris, Dan Markovich, Marc Difronzo, Carlos Palomo, and Wade Berreth. Thank you all for the time and effort that you have put into this program, you will be missed.
CofC would like to wish a very special farewell to Head Coach, Clint Weimann. Clint must resign as CofC RFC Head Coach due to time restraints induced by his newest business venture. It is clear to all that have been involved with this team, that the club could not have progressed the way it did this season without the guidance and leadership of Coach Clint. Thank you so much for all of the work that you put into this team on a voluntary basis. We hope that you will be able to be involved in some type of capacity in the near future. The team would also like to say thank you to Clint's wife Whitney and his two daughters, India and Sky, for allowing us to steal their dad 3 days a week for the last 3 years.
That being said, CofC Men's Rugby will be accepting applicants for the vacant Head Coaching position. Any takers? Contact the club president by sending him an email. The address can be located under the 'Club Information' tab on the 'Officers' page.

In a disappointing end to a surprising season, the College of Charleston Cougars were eliminated from playoff contention with a loss to Furman University. The match was played in pouring, freezing rain, with sloppy play from both sides. Oliver "TJ Mackie" scored the opening try of the game and got 2 tries called back for being "held up". Before the end of the half, CofC was knocking on the door to another try, but as the team began a penalty play, the sir called a penalty on CofC for performing a "Cavalry Charge", Furman responded by taking possession, driving down the filed and scoring a try of their own. The score was 5-5 at half-time. The second half got colder and sloppier, as both teams turned the game into a kicking contest. Furman added a try and 2 penalty kicks in the second half, while JJ Garrell added a Cougar try of his own towards the end of the match off of an 8-man pick. The final score was 18-10, Furman.
Furman will advance to the South Playoffs after defeating Coastal Carolina in the Peach Championship by 2 points. Furman played 1 regular season matrix game, in which they lost to Lander University who went on to lose to Coastal Carolina in the Peach Playoffs, received 3 forfeit wins, won 2 games in the Peach Playoffs, and finished the matrix season with a 5-1 record.
Although the season did not end the way the team had hoped, the Cougars fought hard all season and earned the 1st undefeated regular season record in school history. The Cougars also defeated the #4 D-III team in the country by beating Coastal Carolina for the 1st time in matrix play. CofC ended the matrix season with a 4-1 record (playing 4 of the 5 games, with 1 forfeit win). After losing so many vital seniors, not many people thought that the young Cougars had a shot at any type of playoffs, but as the team bought into the season game plan and began to mesh as one unit, CofC became a force to be reckoned with. With a tough mindset and a commitment to excellence, the CofC RFC, founded in 2002, has emerged as a collegiate rugby contender. The sky is the limit for the club, but nothing will come easy, the young team must keep working hard in order to leave their mark in history and shock the world!

The CofC Cougars went into their Matrix Match with Armstrong Atlantic University completely underestimating the 2nd year club. Midway through the 1st half, Armstrong scored a try from an elusive run by their winger. This try not only put 5 points on the board, but it also marked the 1st time in the 2011 Matrix season that the Cougars were forced to stage a comeback. It didn't take long for Captain/8-Man, Joey Ingham, to put the team on his back and score 2 brilliant, multiple-tackle breaking tries. George "Big Dawg" Woolston wanted a try and when Big Dawg wants a try, Big Dawg gets a try. George jumped into the back-line and made a few opposing backs look silly as they tried to tame the Dawg (but everyone knows that's impossible). Selfishly, George only converted the kick on his own try. The 2nd half began and CofC brought in a few key reinforcements. The fresh legs sparked a few tantalizing runs by the Cougars, who added one more try by Austin Coon before the end of the match. The final score was 26-10, CofC. The win moved the Cougars to 4-0 on the season, their 1st undefeated Matrix season in club history. Congrats men. Next Step, Peach Playoffs!
Man of the Match: The Captain, Mr. James Joseph Ingham, for going Beast Mode and jump-starting CofC's offense.
Dick of the Day: Jazzy Jeff... well, for no reason in particular, he's just kind of a dick.

The St. Patty's Tourney of 2011 gave the CofC RFC an opportunity to give some valuable B-Side players experience, as well as fine tune some A-Side players. The scores were irrelevant, but some very nice plays and exceptional efforts were turned in. Shaun White had a timely interception for a try, playing wing for the 1st time this season. Tater Smith had a nice 80 meter try. Coti Phillips broke his nose and explained it like this, "Sometimes, I forget that I don't have a helmet and facemask on..." (he's been playing rugby for 2 years now). Apparently, Ray Chappell thought that the Peach Playoffs had started already because he gave 110% every single play all weekend and his face can prove it. Finally, playing in the Social Bracket has its consequences. The last day of the tournament resulted in a no-show by Wilmington, which meant that the Cougars finished in 5th place in their bracket! (out of 6 teams)... The Cougars decided to end the tourney with a little intra-squad 7s scrimmage. The scrimmage revealed 2 things: 1. Chris "He Hate Me" Natoli is faster and more athletic than anyone knew and 2. Joey Ingham is terrible at 7s!
Men of the Match: Jeremy "Penguin" Tindal and Ray "El Nino" Chappell for being all over the field and playing great rugby.
Dick of the Day: Chris "He Hate Me" Natoli for leaving Ray's kit at the hotel, feeding the ball to the other team, and then waiting until intra-squad 7s to show what he's capable of.
Citadel Matrix Match 2011

Coming off of a huge victory the week before, the Cougars set out to take on their Cross-town rivals, The Citadel. For the first time ever, not only were matrix points on the line, but the inaugural battle for the "Holy City Cup", sponsored by Good Nature Gardening, was also up for grabs. The match began in a similar fashion to the Coastal game, with a high kick and a bone-jarring tackle by flanker, JJ Garrell. Upon contact, the ball popped out and bounced around until Ian "Shaun White" Mueller kicked it into the hands of the Citadel winger. The fearful cadet quickly ran into his own try zone to avoid contact, only to be chased down and slammed by Austin Coon. The ball came out of the cadet's hands just in time for Geroge "Big Dawg" Woolston to pounce on the timely try. After the quick score, Charleston lost focus and played on their heels for much of the first half, but refused to allow the Bulldogs to score. In the second half, CofC saw some promising play from their wingers, Tate Smith and Wade Berreth, who each scored brilliant break away tries, in which they broke at least 3 tackles a piece. Each team played down a man for a portion of the game and CofC conceded 1 try at the very end of the match, but in the end, the Cougars pulled out another matrix victory, making them 3-0 on the season. There is still work to be done for the young CofC squad, but there is no doubt that the team is improving and will continue to improve as long as each player commits to bettering themselves at each and every practice. Next step, Armstrong Atlantic, March 5.
Man of the Match: Wade Berreth for being a pure German thoroughbred and learning how to catch, and thus, being practically unstoppable.
Dick of the Day: Austin Coon for completely whiffing on a kick that would have set up an easy try. "I feel ya Charlie Brown"
