CofC vs App State

After moving up to Division II this season, for the first time in club history the Cougars faced the long established D2 powerhouse Appalachian State, or as they call themselves: AHO. The two teams sought to establish unquestioned dominance of the Western Division, having both been undefeated so far in the season. It was up to CofC to fight the very uphill battle against AHO, as they played them in their football stadium in Boone. The weather was in the low thirties with light snowfall, and in combination with the high elevation, the Cougars were on very unfamiliar turf. At first, the game was tight, roughly ten minutes in App State led the Cougars 12 to 8 thanks to a penalty kick by George Woolston and a hard-earned try by eight-man Jon Bernstein. But the Cougars would falter in the first half, as poor defensive play enabled AHO to take a substantial lead by halftime, 33-8. CofC was not about to go without a fight, and in the second half they showed why they are definitely serious contenders for the Conference championship. George Woolston got the team going with a big try early on, then D.J. Tippins scored another to bring the Cougars even closer. AHO responded with another try of their own, making the score 38-22. Then Kenny Evans made a great run and scored a crucial try to bring the Cougars within 10 points with only six minutes left to play: 38-29. Unfortunately, AHO managed to score again in the closing minutes to dash Cougars hopes of mounting an incredible comeback, and the game ended 45-29. With four tries scored, CofC still secured a bonus point and maintained their first place standing due to a rescheduling AHO was forced to make earlier in the season. The Cougars look forward to facing the Mountaineers again in the playoffs, this time on neutral ground.

CofC vs Furman

CofC traveled to Greenville February 18th to face division rivals Furman University in a highly anticipated match, as Furman knocked CofC out of the playoffs in a bitterly contested game last season. The Cougars started off sluggish, a reoccurring theme for them this season, and allowed Furman to get the early lead with a penalty kick and a try in the first ten minutes. After a deserved talking to from Coach Greg, CofC began their game in earnest and Furman quickly realized they faced a vastly more athletic squad this time around. Once again, the forwards starting dominating the rucks and scurms, and with the Cougars able to firmly maintain possession, the backs began to score lots of points, without their until now leading try-scorer Kenny Evans. Notable tries include a powerful eight-man pick by Jon Bernstein that gave Fletch an important momentum shifting try, as well as a rare totally unassisted try by fullback Andrew Tsaforis on a kick return. Andrew also earned his zulu earlier in the game. Scrummy Brian Ablapnap used his sneaky scrummy skills to score off a quick-tap on an inattentive Paladin defense. On the whole try scorers included: Brian Ablapnap (2) Andrew Tsaforis (2) Fletch (1) Ian Mueller (2) George Woolston (1) Chris Natoli (1). Also of note: George Woolston made six of nine kick attempts, giving him a total of 17 points on the day. The final score was 57-29, and the Cougars returned triumphant from Greenville with a commanding lead in the Western Division of the Southern Rugby Conference.

The Citadel vs. CofC 2012

The Cougars looked to repeat their performance from last week against crosstown rivals Citadel in the 2nd annual Holy City Cup. Undoubtedly, the Citadel Bulldogs were looking for vengeance after having been beaten by CofC so many times in the past, especially after COFC won the Citadel hosted Toys-For-Tots Tourney in the fall. Another year will pass without vindication for the Bulldogs however, as the Cougars demonstrated once again who owns the city of Charleston. The game started a little rocky for the Cougars, eightman Tall John Bernstein gave away two stupid penalties for hands in the ruck and then talking back to the ref, resulting in a field goal for the Bulldogs in the first few minutes. The Cougars responded quickly enough, as the quick hands of the backline gave winger Kenny Evans his first try of the game. However, they certainly could not have done so well without the brilliant pack play today, as the forwards won ruck after ruck, scrum downs and line-outs as they kept the ball out of Citadel hands. And certainly their impenetrable defense deserves note, as the Citadel side attempted repeatedly to hammer the ball through, only to meet a punishing iron wall. With the ball securely under Cougar control, it wasn't hard for the CofC backline to earn multiple tries. Quick hands gave Kenny two more tries and then he returned a kick for a total of four on the day. Outside Center Ian Mueller managed two of his own as overloads repeatedly stymied a dazed Citadel defense. An attack on the weak side gave flyhalf Brendan DeLuke his first try of the season as well. Then inside center Grandpa Fletch intercepted a pass, chip kicked it over a hapless fullback and scored his third try of the season. Near the end, the forwards decided they wanted a little action of their own, and hooker Chris Natoli snagged the ball out of the ruck, then took it in himself to earn his zulu warrior. The Citadel did manage to squeeze a couple tries in but the final score was a decisive 57 to 13.

Season Opener UNCC vs. Cofc

After a tough weekend in Greenville, the Cougars looked to bounce back against new Southern Conference opponent UNC Charlotte. The game began closely contested, as initial drives by both teams were stymied by penalties and knock-ons. About twenty minutes in, Prop Christian Massamillo outpaced UNCC forwards on a hammer and then ran through their backline to score the games first try, giving CofC a 5 nil lead. The 49ers responded quickly enough, pushing the Cougars back inside their own twenty-two before converting a penalty kick for three points. Again, the Cougars pushed deep into 49er territory but a respectable goal-line stand by UNCC prevented CofC from scoring, and the half ended 5-3. The Cougars came out fighting in the second half though, shortly after the opening kick-off Winger Kenny Evans took a pass from outside center Ian Mueller 80 meters down the field for the game's second try. George Woolston converted the kick and the Cougars added to their lead: 12-3. The 49ers showed some more determination to keep it close, and scored a second try and converted a kick to make the score 12-10. The game's pace continued to accelerate, and the Cougar backline outran UNCC, excellent passing down the line enabled Ian Mueller to score his first try of the day after moving to winger. It wasn't long before Christian Massamillo poached a ball from an uncontested ruck, after Christian was tackled scrummy Brian Abplanap passed to flyhalf Brendan DeLuke. With only one UNCC winger defending against Brendan and Ian, the 49ers were unable to stop Ian from scoring an easy second try. At this point the score was 22-10, and the Cougars refused to relent their onslaught. Some clever passing between inside center Ed "Fletch" Fletcher and Ian gave Fletch his zulu, and the Cougars made the lead 27-10. Fletch would get one more off a scrum close to the tryzone before the game ended, final score: 34-10.

Man of the Match: Hugo Roller for being allover the pitch, dominating rucks, making big tackles and locking down the scrum.

Ian Mueller: For scoring two trys and assisting two more.

Dick of the Day: Former Captain Austin Coon for getting Red Card from the sideline.
